I’m a bit familiar with Ted through his contributing for MacWorld. I’m not sure if this was cross posted to MacWorld, where I may have skipped it, as we don’t use iWork. Still a good reference though.
Personally, I really wish Apple would rethink this whole “iTunes as a conduit for everything” thing. It was one thing when we all just had an iPod and synced music, but as of the iPhone with apps and everything else now it is just an abomination. We need something more 21st century. Anyway. Per Chris Breen’s recommendation I’ve happily adopted GoodReader to access PDFs etc and avoid tethering & syncing.

Glad you found the numbers useful. I didn’t unpack the ministack completely last year and it has been sitting idle on the shelf. I must make some time to put a drive in it and see how it works.

Nice writeup and illustrations. I’m comparing FW and USB external drives on my Mini right now, so the test case and numbers prove quite helpful.

Sorry for the plain text continuous posting. Typed it in notepad and copy/pasted it into word press. Will revise my posting.

I hope Apple will listen as well. The iPad could be insanely great … Right now it is rough around the edges due to the iPhone /iPod Touch limitations.
